Though somewhere in Control's (John Rodriguez's) musings, he did indicate that he had reason to believe that his parents were a love match of some sort, I can't shake the suspicion that Jackie Severance (his mom) was directed by Lowry or someone like him even higher up in Central to find a mate with certain characteristics that offset her own. I feel the reason she was directed to do this is because the genes that created her father and her were successful in creating great Central agents. However, the trilogy often contains indications that Jack and Jackie Severance lacked in altruism, empathy, and common decency in direct proportion to their successes in sneakiness, narcissism, fearlessness and secrecy. Does anyone but me get the feeling that Jackie married Control's father for his temperament as an artist, with concomitant levels of consciousness of "the other" and the wider world that the Severance family line lacked? That Jack and Jackie, along with all of their superiors were willing to do anything to unlock the mysteries of Area X that had eluded them since it's appearance, and so combining the Severance bullheaded hunter/tracker scary dominant overkill with the more gentle humanistic ideals of the Rodriquez genes might deliver a child with just the right amount of both skill sets to finally unlock Area X? Sort of like a way played down "Dune" search for the Quizat Hadderich through genetic bloodlines? Jackie kept a very short leash on John as he meandered through his time with Central, keeping him busy on cases that were beneath his abilities, possibly even setting up the whole incident that got him kicked down and made him accept whatever postings his mother got him while she was really just keeping him in a holding pen until Central could unleash him on Area X and The Border if and when needed? I think they totally controlled him from birth to be a weapon, and an expendable one at that. Some of this is over reaching on my part, because I always do that. I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts.

Now the Southern Reach Wiki has the Achievements feature! Which means every member can earn badges when collaborating with the wiki. There are different ways of collaborating, so I’ll explain a bit about each category of achievements:
Achievements you earn by making edits on any page of the wiki (1 edit - 5 edits - 10 edits - so on).
Achievements you earn by adding pictures to any page (1 pic - 5 pics - 10 pics - so on).
Achievements related to categories of pages. The more you organize pages into categories, the more you level up your position.
Achievements you get by posting or commenting on blog posts of other members.
You can earn Creatures by contributing to the wiki every day. Examples: every 5 days – every 14 days – so on...
Achievements you earn by creating an account and interacting with other members.
You will notice the badges of each achievement you earn are now showing on the right side of your profile page. It looks like this:
Since this feature has been implemented this week, the achievements will start counting from now on and the edits you have made previously will not count (unfortunately there’s nothing I can do about it).
If you have any doubts, let me know. Have fun!
This might be a silly question but why was Control so mesmerized by Ghost Bird? I thought maybe it was because she was part of Area X but then wouldn't other people experience the same attraction toward her? Was it that he liked the parts of her that were the biologist?
At the end of Acceptance, Control realizes/remembers who he "really" is. But I never caught on. I understand he became a part of Area X, but was he originally part of it before? What context am I missing?
"Where lies the strangling fruit that came from the hand of the sinner I shall bring forth the seeds of the dead to share with the worms that gather in the darkness and surround the world with the power of their lives while from the dim-lit halls of other places forms that could never be writhe for the impatience of the few who have never seen or been seen. In the black water with the sun shining at midnight, those fruit shall come ripe and in the darkness of that which is golden shall split open to reveal the revelation of the fatal softness in the earth. The shadows of the abyss are like the petals of a monstrous flower that shall blossom within the skull and expand the mind beyond what any man can bear..."
Now The Southern Reach Wiki has its Discuss page, so we won't use the old forum anymore (that forum was created back on 2014 and became obsolete, the only activity lately was from trolls).
This is the space for you to post your opinions and thoughts on the Southern Reach books and Annihilation movie.
When posting, notice that you should choose a category for your post, this will keep the community organized.
You can choose between each book, about the author Jeff VanderMeer, the Annihilation movie, or about the Southern Reach Wiki itself (Wiki Updates).
To choose a category, just lay your cursor over "Filter" to see the list.
