The event occurs within The Southern Reach trilogy in an area of the United States, most likely Florida, including one or two nearby islands. The event is the name given to the creation of a corridor of land surrounding Area X which is named the border.
Many in the Southern Reach's Science Department believe that there have been two major events concerning Area X: "Event One" being the creation of Area X, "Event Two" being the creation of the border. They theorize that the creation of the border was a reaction to Area X, and that both events were triggered by different presences.[1]

The event took place approximately thirty years prior to the events in Annihilation. It is believed that Area X, which is slowly expanding every year, threatens the existence of the Earth. The trilogy follows the event before, during, and after the creation of Area X.
Approximately 1500 people living in a small working class village and its environs were believed to have been destroyed during the event. The event may have been an attempt by an unknown entity to contain Area X and slow its expansion.
